10 Things a New Blogger Needs to Know

Monday, October 6, 2014

If you do not know my blogging story, it started when I was going through a lot of things and wanted a way to document my feelings and also be able to write. It was on a platform called Webs and I kept it primarily to myself.

After following multiple blogs I knew I wanted to grow and made the switch to Blogger over a year and a half later. A year and a half later too late. So you can say there are a few choice words I would have for my earlier blogger self.

1// Blogging is a small business you are starting this very moment. You decide how big you want this business to grow. You decide how much time you want to put into this business. You also decide if you want to monetize this small business or keep it casual.

2// Start your blog on a reputable blogging platform such as Blogger. I made the mistake of hiding my blog for the first year on some no name wed hosting platform. No one knew my blog and some days I felt like I had my best writing days.

3// Design is extremely important. When I first made the switch from no name web host to Blogger, I designed my own logo and used the generic design. I soon realized I needed something better and every since have been trying to bring my design up to par.

4// Blog consultations. All day, everyday. I just had my first one with Emily from Hudson & Emily and wish I had done one sooner. I learned so much valuable information in such a short time.

5// Comment on your favorite blogs instead of just being a reader. It helps you build a great community and allows you to get more readers in the process.

6// Pictures and graphics can make or break a post. It's what can take your posts from ordinary to way, totally awesome.

7// PicMonkey or Canva. Use them. They will be your best friend. And allow you to have those way, totally awesome graphics I mentioned above.

8//  Editorial calendar. Plan your posts. In the beginning of my blogging journey I actually wrote a lot of posts based off of what was on the news or current with celebrities. Maybe this is still what I need to be telling myself.

9// You are just as important and talented as everyone else. Don't hold back or hide. Dive full force in and believe in what you are writing.

10// Things are going to get fun. Reallllly fun. You will have blates, blogger friends and other blogging perks that you will have to explain to family and friends. It's going to be great.

What advice would you give a new blogger?

  1. Great tips girl! I would advise you to be open about your blog. (Which I need to follow too!!) Turns out some of your biggest fans and traffic sources can be from people you know in real life. :)

  4. Something I wish I had known when I started this years ago. Especially because I was on the platform called webs? I am not even sure how I found it or why but if I had started on Blogger, this "business" would be a lot further for sure!
