Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!

Wednesday, March 2, 2011

Today, March 2, is Dr. Seuss' birthday aka READ ACROSS AMERICA DAY.

Read Across America is a great program that was brough on by the National Education Association to encourage children to read. Books and reading are one of my favorite pastimes. I could go through a book a day if I had the time to just sit leisurely like that *sigh* But in all seriousness, children need to read to further their education and development. Get them off the couch and away from the video games and see what reading is all about. There's a whole new world in reading. A world you can make up in your mind that include pictures and scenarios. It is what books are all about.
Dr. Seuss was and still is one of the best children's authors around. He has written 44 children's books under his pen name and they all contain limericks and rhyming that when you are younger you can't help but love. His books have sold over 222 million copies worldwide and translated into 22 languages. A personal favorite I think was Green Eggs and Ham. Maybe because every elementary school has that one day where you make green eggs. I mean what could be cooler to a 7 year old? Very close favorite is the all beloved Cat in the Hat. I'm a cat lover so it speaks for itself. Dr. Seuss is also a brother of Sigma Phi Epsilon which makes him my brother :P
Libraries, schools and companies across America are holding reading events today to celebrate Read Across America. Everyone should particpate even if you are a little old for the Green Eggs and Ham. Pick up your own book and take a few hours to yourself and immerse yourself in the world of books today. Read. Read. Read.
