At Least it's Father's Day

Sunday, June 15, 2014

Father's Day is always an interesting time for me. You see, my dad is alive and well but we do not have the greatest father/daughter relationship. There isn't a post or card that I can write that says thanks dad! deep down from my heart. I find a simple card, sign it and mail it out. Because seeing him on Father's Day, he just hasn't had the time for that.

He has never been my shoulder to cry on.

He has never been a support system or helped me make big decisions.

He has never been a person who I can count on.

He is my "At Least" dad.

To him:
"At least" he is a better father than his dad, who was an alcoholic and he saw as an unfit dad. Well, my dad hasn't done too much better as I struggled a lot after school and he never offered to help.

"At least" he gives me things. He never really understood I just wanted his time, his presence at my big moments, not his money.

"At least" he tries to talk to me and have a relationship. Where he calls me, we chat about me getting a new job, Lily and nothing more personal than that. If that's what you call a relationship...

To other people:

"At least" you have a dad. A dad that has me look at other father/daughter relationships with envy because he has never been a support system for me.

"At least" he talks to you. Yea, once a month. Otherwise, I get a response that he was busy working to call me back.

"At least" he was at your wedding. I can look at this sweet picture and wish the meaning behind it meant more.

With this, I will never give up hope though. I still wish for a better relationship, for me and him to really know each other. During wedding planning, we became closer, or so I thought. He would call more, was interested and even offered to give some money to help us out. He wanted his friends there because he "was so proud." He wanted the father/daughter dance and had genuine smiles on his face.

But unfortunately, the past year it has fallen back into the same routine of missed calls, not spending holidays together and not being in a big part of my life. He has advanced in his work a lot the past year, but not his relationship with his daughter.

Since it has been 16 years of this, I am at peace with the parent he is after many missed field hockey games and not being there for my first broken heart. He is missing out on my life. He makes choices to not give me 5 minutes of his week and instead says he was busy working all week. I will still carry on with my life. Still be at peace with where I am as a woman and building my own family. A family where I want my husband to be the best father he can be. And I know he will be.

I also take the time this day to remember the special men in my life that have supported me. My uncles and my new father-in-law.

I hope everyone has a wonderful Father's Day!

Blondin' and Bobbin'

Wednesday, June 11, 2014

In honor of a year since I chopped all my hair off, I figured I needed a new do. Which, you might have previewed on Instagram.

My last haircut/ dye was back in October when I had an utter two day disaster and was way overdue for an update. The dead ends and blah hair color had to go.

When I got back into the hairdresser chair, she asked what we were doing today. And I had no answer.

She asked trim or cut. Shorter or same length. Colored or not. I had none of the above.

She suggested a bob. And I said sure! And I also made the decision to go back to blonder. I mean, after this dreadful winter we had can you blame me?

Oh, the blur.
I am now back to my blonde and have entered the world of the bob. And it was a definite plus with the Florida heat and humidity.

And I had said I wanted to grow out my hair. Silly. But I feel like I am ready to take on the world and the move with this new hair!

Have you taken on a new do' for summer? How great does it make you feel?

One Year Down; Forever to Go

Saturday, June 7, 2014

One year ago, we walked down the aisle together as husband and wife.

One year ago we spent the night dancing away with our family and best friends celebrating our love.

One year ago I made a lifetime commitment to you as my husband. And agreed to be your wife.

I am so lucky to call you my husband and the past year has been nothing but wonderful. Even through the little disagreements, the dance parties have won out. We have grown in our marriage and I am so excited for what is to come for our future. As long as we are together, this life will be sweet for certain.

Love you so husband of mine. Happy Annniversary!

When an Introvert Marries an Extrovert

Thursday, June 5, 2014

By nature, I was born an introvert. I had my years where I fought against it but it was always there. I craved taking a break, taking a night to myself. The typical introvert.
An introvert is a person who is energized by being alone and whose energy is drained by being around other people.

In college, I always wanted to know when my roommate wasn't going to be in the room and took that time to really enjoy the room. Even if there was a huge party going on. I need to recharge by myself.

My husband is the definition of an extrovert. He loves people. Being around people. Talking to people. Making small talk. All the things that make me cringe.

An extrovert is a person who is energized by being around other people. This is the opposite of an introvert who is energized by being alone.

It might sound like these two types of people could never exist, but in fact, it has been shown that these two types of people make the perfect couple. As if we needed to be told that.

Basic rundown of what happens when an introvert marries an extrovert:

|| Wants to go out when you just want to sit on the couch and watch a movie

|| After work, writing calms you and they just want to talk about the day.But living out the whole day has already drained you.

|| People and crowds are their thing. For you, crowds and people make you want to sit in the corner.

|| Center of attention is the ultimate goal. But for you, when all eyes are on you, all kinds of uncomfortable happens. Wedding day, anyone?

But, fear not introverts. Marrying an extrovert has its rewards.

-Like he will be the one organizing your social calendar so you actually have fun activities on your weekends off. Otherwise, you might just sit at home watching Grey's Anatomy on Netflix. Embrace the nights out, to allow him to air the extrovertness. And give you the experiences you actually do want before kids.

-He teaches you just how to deal with the attention a little more. Let's not go overboard and say you love it, but you learn to appreciate the fact that people enjoy your company and want to get to know you. You will get used to them wanting to flaunt you around and brag about your life. Allow them to boast a little. He will go deep, while you stay surface. You will learn from him.

-He gives you that confidence you might lack when going after what you really want. Teachings in how to be awesome. When they go up to people, listen to him, feed off of what he is saying.

And for your extroverts. An introvert can really slow you down and let your grow, in the best way possible.

-Like realizing how nice it is to take time to recollect yourself after an exhausting day. Rather than jump right into a days recap. Let the introvert have some moments to themselves. Acknowledge that they need that.

-Teaching you just how great it is to have hobbies and be by yourself. All hobbies. They really are stress relievers that you can have by yourself and can be fun. Start a hobby with your introvert. Make it a couples date. Make it fun and another way to allow your introvert to recharge away from a group.

-Allowing you to realize that you are your best self. With or without the approval of others. And other people cheering you on. You are your biggest cheerleader.  Let an introvert teach you how to be your own cheerleader, but help them reach out to others for help.

With any relationship, it's always an adjustment. Learning the way to your introvert/extroverts heart is another one of the adjustments. But the rewards allow for a much greater growth in your marriage.

What have you encountered in an introvert/extrovert relationship?
